A Chapter Divided Campaign Weekend Army Lists (Very long post!)

So, I sit here writing this post on the Friday night before a campaign weekend at Warhammer World that I will be attending. It is called ‘A Chapter Divided’ and focusses on a Space Marine chapter that is split down the middle and is on the brink of a civil war. On one side, you have the Traditionalists; think Guilliman and his Ultramarines and you’ll have a rough idea on what their stance is. Then you have the winners… Um, I mean… Pragmatists. They are more willing to deviate from the Codex Astartes and change up their tactics to meet the situation. How it will be decided will be on honour points and glory points that will be accumulated over the course of the campaign weekend. Honour is how honourably you fight; how many challenges you make, accept and win; how many challenges your Tribune (basically a free Space Marine veteran sergeant with 50pts of wargear that you bolt onto your army. He’s supposed to be there to ensure the Chapter’s will is being enforced on all fronts) wins; how many monstrous creatures you slay and so on and so forth. Glory is basically the measure of victory points you accumulate over the weekend. Glory dictates which faction wins, honour dictates how they go about deciding the fate of their chapter.

So, I’ve spent the past few weeks painting up models and frantically basing them to take part in this campaign. I will be leading my Eldar as they pursue their own agenda on the planet Ophelion, the theatre of war where the fate of the Remnants chapter will be decided, and have written up all my army lists, (which are even more fluff friendly than usual; I’m even fielding Howling Banshees!) as well as the small backstory that goes before them. I have my Tribune ready, my warhost is assembled and all preparations are complete. May Khaine guide my blades!

Farseer Lireia Narésiel emerged from her Falcon, long brown hair tied into a neat bun that was held in place by a simple wraithbone stick. Stray hairs whipped about her face as piercing blue eyes scanned the horizon, five of her Warlock advisers exiting afterwards to flank her. The enemies of the Eldar on this planet were numerous and Farseer Lireia was not used to leading from a military position.

“Farseer,” the nearest Warlock started, “why are we even dealing with the Mon-keigh? Their agenda conflicts with our own, not to mention what happened last time.”

“The skeins of fate have spoken,” Lireia responded, seeming to just stare off into the distance, “it has decreed that we are to accommodate the representative of the Mon-keigh, lest we bring down the fury of the entire chapter of Space Marines that recently entered the system.”

“The Remnants?”

“Indeed. Our operations on the planet’s surface can ill afford additional interference.” She paused, turning back to her Seer Council, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her pointed ear. “Besides, if my visions are correct, we will only need to accommodate one primitive. He should not draw too much attention to us here.”

“What of Autarch Thalinia? She wasn’t too keen on the last time we cast our lot in with primitives,” the Warlock inquired, causing the Farseer to glance to the side. She had argued with Thalinia before on the surface of Amarah Prime when she tried to use the local Imperial Guard regiment as a distraction.

“Our path in this is clear. If we refuse to accommodate this human then we would earn the ire of his entire Chapter of Space Marines. We only have a handful of Aspect Warriors and very little aid this far out, therefore we can not afford interference from more Mon-keigh.” She stopped again, walking back over to the Falcon which remained stationary, hovering above the ground with the hum of grav-engines. “Primitives are like pests, you see. Too many and you become beset by them; you need to start dedicating time and resources in stamping them out or they will impede your progress. Keeping the number of pests interfering to a minimum, however, allows you to largely ignore and avoid them.”

“Do you have a plan, Farseer?” the Warlock asked, turning to face her as the others kept their watch over the surrounding area. Everything was quiet, but the warrior seers of the Craftworld maintained their vigil.

“Myself and Autarch Thalinia will meet with the Mon-keigh who is deployed to find us. We will present ourselves to him and allow him to travel with us, at arms length of course. Space Marines are easy to fool,” Lireia replied with a smile. For now, we have preparations to make. I must consult the skeins of fate once more to divine our next course of action while we wait for these humans to arrive.”

——

“The Emperor protects, Captain,” a hulking Space Marine growled through his helmet’s vox unit to another, similarly large man. His power armour was adorned with golden aquilas and a Crux Terminatus on the left shoulder pad. His helmet showed a white halo of laurels around the top, but was otherwise very standard; it was obviously the standard power armour of a Space Marine, though the level of decoration would give the impression that he was a member of the revered first company. He did not appear to carry a ranged weapon, not even a standard Astartes bolt pistol side-arm, though his hands were clasped in large gauntlets, four small, crackling blades protruding from the knuckles. On his back was an equally decorated jump pack, emphasising his already hulking stature.

The Captain, on the other hand, wore no helmet, his buzz-cut head decorated with chiselled, yet scarred features. His armour was similar to the other Marine’s, though his armour was masterfully crafted. The level of decoration was far above that of the other Marine’s, which was in no way a dull, standard set of armour, and his weapons mirrored his armour’s level of construction, a power sword sheathed at his left and an archaic grav-pistol mag-locked to his right thigh. His expression was completely neutral, though he offered a nod at the jump pack wearing Marine.

“Indeed, Brother Herilus,” he acknowledged as he nodded. “I have briefed you as much as I can in this matter. We know very little of the Eldar of Craftworld Ithyl-Loc; they are smaller and tend to avoid confrontation, but they are operating on the planet Ophelion under the ignorant nose of Governor Schwachgeist,” he continued, glancing to the door of the Thunderhawk and eyeing the door release button.

“Why do we not just wipe them out? We should not allow foul xenos on one of the Emperor’s planets, and if what you said is true then they should not be able to stand against our zeal,” Herilus responded, standing by the closed door, though his boots were still mag-locked to the floor.

“You have fought the Eldar before, Brother,” the Captain replied, shaking his head, “were we to move against them aggressively, they would only slip back into the shadows. This is not a larger, more militant Craftworld we are dealing with this time.” He pressed the button to release the door and the hatch started to open, revealing the surface of the planet below the speeding gunship. “Plus, we do not believe that their agenda is of our immediate concern. The forces of Chaos are operating on the planet, spreading their vile corruption to the planet’s populace. Whilst we have sent other members of the First Company as Tribunes of our chapter to keep an eye on them, we need to keep our eyes everywhere. The fools within the Traditionalist faction cannot be trusted to take the necessary steps to discover what the various heretics and xenos that prosper on our planet’s surface intend to do. Chapter Master Ares has decreed that the faction that succeeds in the task of rooting out and cleansing the planet of these traitors and aliens will decide on which road our chapter takes.”

“I understand, Captain. May the Emperor watch over you,” Herilus acknowledged as he stepped towards the back of the Thunderhawk.

“May he watch over us all in this dark time, Brother Herilus.” With that, Herilus ran up to the edge of the ramp that now trailed behind the Thunderhawk and dived off, freefalling towards the ground with his jump pack ready to slow his descent. He did not like having to watch over the Eldar of all races, having seen their lies and trickery in battles past, but he was a Space Marine. A veteran of the vaunted First Company. He would not falter in his duty to the Chapter, or the Emperor.

———

Herilus stalked through the foliage a few miles from the local Hive City. His power armour was clunky, though his movement was careful and very deliberate; his power armour was more like a second skin, albeit a bulky one, than a suit of armour. He had set his helmet’s interface to scan for any signatures in the foliage, knowing that the Eldar were a slippery prey to track through conventional means. He had stalked through the foliage for a few days and found nothing of note. He encountered a small scouting party of heretics, but the Emperor’s justice was swiftly dealt to the reeling traitors as he slammed into the squad with his jump pack, swiping the unclean away with his lightning claws with the effort one may expend to swat at a pest. He had not, however, encountered his quarry. He had not encountered the Eldar.

A sound behind him caused him to face the origin of the noise, lightning claws crackling and ready to meet what could be a new threat. His helmet locked onto a signature that rose up and out of the foliage. Had the foul Tyranids made it to this part of the planet? He had not encountered any mutated vegetation in this area of the planet, but it was not an impossibility. He watched as a harmless bird flew from the bushes and up to the sky. He eased up from his combat stance and turned around to continue his hunt.

“So, you’re the human that Farseer Lireia prophesised about. I’m not impressed,” came a female sounding voice, though it rang out with alien tones and sounds. Before him stood a woman, tall with striking features and pointed ears poking out from behind red hair. Her armour was form fitting, dark green in colour and she appeared to have her arms folded across her chest, a large, alien device on her back with another large, alien firearm strapped across the back of it; it did not take him long to recognise the device as a warp jump generator, and the firearm to be the same as the one that was typically carried by their race’s Dark Reaper warrior aspect. At her left she appeared to carry a curved, elegant power sword, alien runes and gems decorating the hilt. His helmet readout started to show multiple blips that seemed to appear, then disappear only to reappear somewhere else. He discerned that she must be an Autarch of the Craftworld Ithyl-Loc, and that the other signatures were those of Warp Spider warrior aspects.

“So, you know why I am here then, alien?” Herilus responded, his voice as bitter as the one who addressed him.

“I do not, no. I only know that you would come to find us.” She paused, glancing to the side momentarily. He considered attacking. Autarchs were of high rank in the Eldar’s command structure and removing her could prove beneficial. His trail of thought was interrupted as she turned back to face him, addressing him once more. “So, now that you have found us,” she started, her voice conveying the sense of irony that the situation carried, “what is your next move, Space Marine?”

“My orders are not of your concern, xeno,” he retorted, causing some of the signatures to weave into positions all around him. He was confident in his ability to slay the woman before him, though he was unsure if he could then fight off her retinue of Aspect Warriors.

“Do not pretend, Mon-keigh,” the Autarch started, her eyes narrowing, “I would rather slay you where you stand just as much as I feel that you wish to hopelessly try the same to me, however the prophecy was clear.”

“And what did your prophecy dictate?” Herilus asked mockingly, a grin forming beneath his helmet.

The Autarch frowned, though she glanced off to the side again. He heard a low humming noise from the distance. “That we are to cooperate, for now.”

As she finished, an Eldar grav tank swooped overhead, circling back on itself and landing between the trees with ease. The back hatch opened up to reveal another woman, though this one was clad in robes as opposed to armour, complex runes covered the front and wraithbone charms hung from golden bracelets around her wrists. She carried numerous small pouches and a large, wraithbone spear. She looked remarkably similar to the Autarch in appearance, though her hair was a darker brown colour as opposed to the Autarch’s more vibrant red. Behind her were five other, similarly dressed Eldar, their wraithbone spears and swords glowed a dull blue. A Farseer and her Warlock advisers; one of the witch leaders of the Eldar people that he assumed was this Farseer Lireia that the Autarch had spoken of.

“Human,” she addressed him, though Herilus felt uneasy. He could not feel her presence in his mind, though that only added to the tension. He did not fear the witch, he knew no fear, though he did not relish the thought of another being in his mind without his knowing. On the subconcious level, he closed his mind.

There is only the Emperor, and he is our shield and protector, he thought to himself, reciting the verses he had been taught. The Farseer raised a curious eyebrow at him momentarily, though her face soon turned back to neutrality. The Autarch had turned to face the Farseer, though remained silent.

“I know why you are here. I know why your Chapter has come to this planet. I know why you sought to find us and I know what you planned to do once you did,” the Farseer continued, walking towards him until coming to a halt about five feet from him. She still held her spear in one hand, though her stance was not one of open hostility. He knew better than to trust Eldar at their appearance, still maintaining the same, cautious stance that he had adopted upon first contact with the bird. “Know that we are not here for your planet. We are not here for resources. We are not here to sabotage your primitive settlements here. We are here because we are hunting the Great Enemy, a common foe that we share.” She stopped, taking a breath, her movements always deliberate, always controlled. “You know that there are greater threats to this planet than us. We know that your Chapter wishes to keep tabs on all operations on this planet, be that of fellow Mon-keigh, fallen humans, aliens and the rest. We could have acted as though we did not notice you stalking us from the moment you landed until the moment that we leave this planet. I can assure you that we do not wish to stay on this world any longer than you wish our presence to be here, so that is why I ask that you work with us in this endeavour, to cleanse this planet of the Great Enemy’s presence, rather than skulking in shadows that our vision has long since pierced.”

Herilus considered his options at that moment. He was instructed to watch over the Eldar operations and they appeared to be willing to accommodate his presence. He found this unnerving, having encountered the Eldar before, he knew not to take them at their word, and he knew that they rarely tolerated the presence of a human unless it served their own agenda. Then again, that is what he was there to discover, and at that moment he was surrounded by the foul xenos. It would be a glorious death, but his duty to the Emperor demanded that he took the path of cooperation for the moment. You carry the Emperor’s will as your torch, with it destroy the shadows. He eased up from his stance, though his lightning claws still crackled with energy and he kept track of each signature that his helmet was detecting. “Then let us find the foul traitors and destroy them, lest their taint spread any further.”

Farseer Lireia’s expression shifted slightly, a subtle and almost unnoticeable change. “Then we have much to discuss, human. Myself and Autarch Thalinia here need to discuss strategy and our approach to this delicate matter with you.”

“Like a primitive Mon-keigh would understand the nuances and subtleties of our real strategy and plans. You always were the better public speaker, sister,” Thalinia muttered to herself in the Eldar native language, a sly grin on her face as she turned to face the other way for the moment, before making her way over to her sister and the hulking Space Marine.
